Besotted beetles are dying while trying to get it on with discarded brown beer bottles, according to research conducted by Darryl Gwynne, a University of Toronto Mississauga professor.
It's a case of mistaken attraction, because the beer bottles happen to possess all of the features that drive male Australian jewel beetles wild.
They're big and orangey brown in color, with a slightly dimpled surface near the bottom (designed to prevent the bottle from slipping out of one's grasp) that reflects light in much the same way as female wing covers.
As a result, the beer bottles are irresistible to the male insects, which will die trying to mate with them in the hot Australian sun.
Gwynne made these observations with colleague David Rentz. This week they were awarded with an Ig Nobel Prize at Harvard University.
The Ig Nobel Prizes, a parody of the Nobel Prizes, are awarded annually by the scientific humor magazine Annals of Improbable Research to "first make people laugh and then make them think." The prizes are intended to celebrate the unusual, honor the imaginative, and spur people's interest in science, medicine and technology.
Gwynne and Rentz were conducting fieldwork in western Australia when they noticed something unusual along the side of the road.
He explained, "We were walking along a dirt road with the usual scattering of beer cans and bottles when we saw about six bottles with beetles on top or crawling up the side. It was clear the beetles were trying to mate with the bottles."
The bottles –- stubbies as they are known in Australia, Canada and a few other countries –- resemble a "super female" jewel beetle. Male beetles are so captivated by the bottles that they will gird their loins and go through the expected motions, refusing to leave until they fry to death, are consumed by hungry ants, or are physically removed by researchers.

(The Edge) -- The Pakatan Rakyat opposition will not implement hudud laws as called for by PAS because it is not in line with the common policies of the coalition, the Federal Consitution and their Orange Book agenda, said Opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

He said the Pakatan leadership respected PAS’ stand on the issue but at the same time accepted the views of the DAP, which opposed hudud laws, Bernama reports.

“We cannot deny the right of any party to voice out what it wants, but we are bound by a common framework and the Federal consititution,” he told a press conference after chairing a meeting of Pakatan Rakyat’s leadership council at PAS’ headquarters here on Wednesday
night.

Also present were DAP adviser Lim Kit Siang, DAP chairman Karpal Singh, PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang and Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) president Datin Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail.

The meeting was called following PAS spiritual leader Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat’s controversial remarks that the party would implement hudud laws if prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak would propose amendments to the federal constitution to allow these laws. Nik Aziz was responding to a challenge from former premier Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad for PAS to implement hudud laws in Kelantan as PAS had claimed that Mahathir had blocked its implementation when he was prime minister.

Asked to comment on Nik Aziz’s statement, Anwar had supported the implementation of hudud in Kelantan, saying that it would not infringe on the rights of non-Muslims. He later clarified that the view he expressed was his personal opinion. Following this, DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng had pointed out that hudud was not part of Pakatan’s common policy.

Other netizens replied on the post that they saw this beggar many times with his frantic way of begging - kneeling on the ground and continuously kowtowing to get people's sympathy and money while an old woman who appears to be seriously ill lies beside him.
The fraud was also found at Dongsishitiao Subway Station in Beijing. A netizen named Budangxiaobing said an old woman with gray hair was lying on the ground with a boy kowtowing, then suddenly jumped up and ran away because chengguan, or urban management officers, were coming.
The chengguan in charge of Xidan area said the man was found begging on the street several times and he was persuaded to leave. But later he kept evading the officers, escaping every time the chengguan patrols got close.
"We don't know how much he earns, and we have no legal jurisdiction to fine him either," said an officer from Xidan's urban management department.

If you had to select one single cause that brings Hong Kong people together, what would it be? Hope of full democracy by 2012? A plunging stock market? South China Morning Post closing its Chinese publishing house? Well, you'll be damned. The number one blog/news story emerging out of Hong Kong as of late yesterday is probably the city's worst sex scandal to date. Since Sunday, photos of some of Hong Kong's most prominent young artistes, including now Edison Chen, Gillian Chung (of Twins fame), Bobo Chan and Cecilia Cheung have surfaced unmercifully on internet forums. Emperor Entertainment Group (EEG), one of Hong Kong's leading record labels and some of the artistes' agent, seek to file lawsuits against those who doctored the pictures, although whether the pictures were in fact doctored is still under dispute. For more, we turn to Day 3 reporting by EastSouthWestNorth and CoolSmurf.

The photographs was reportedly first seen at an overseas internet forum (bcoms.net), but became widely circulated when it reached Hong Kong Golden Forum and Hong Kong Discussion Forum, two of the largest internet forums in Hong Kong. Within a period of five hours, more than 2,000 people have posted comments to the photos. In fact, so many netizens from Hong Kong, Taiwan and mainland China who were eagerly waiting all day and night on these forums led to significant slowdown and bandwidth overload (certain forums were unreachable on Day 2). A post at China's Tianya forum drew as many as 2,500,000 page views and more than 13,000 comments covering 72 pages before being taken down by moderators.

Hong Kong's leading Chinese newspapers, including Oriental Daily, The Sun, Apple Daily, AM 730, Headline Daily, Ming Pao and Sing Pao, were quick to capture the story and printed cropped versions of the pictures, descriptions, in-depth comparisons. In fact, this story was front page for two consecutive days, making the event more important than New Year festivities.

A lot of thought and reasoning has been put to determine whether the photos in question are real or a hoax. Initially, many news outlets claimed the hard position that these photos were all doctored, but have soften their positions as evidence points to the contary. Netizens have compared the background of one of the first photos with Gillian and Edison to the background of a YouTube video in which Edison was interviewed at his home sitting his bed. Uncanny similarities? Yes. Also, experts, such as experienced photographers and Photoshop gurus, pointed out that the sex photos were hard to fake, largely due to the grainy noise background and everyone's inability to find the "original image," from which the head is (if the photos are really doctored) purportedly cut and pasted onto the fake body photo.

In a counter argument, Gillian's fans noted that one of the photos contain the same head shot as one of her old movies. Some people even claim that the photos were originally high-resolution hoaxs that were then glazed over by white noise as to make them authentic. But that doesn't seem likely. At best, some of the photos were doctored, especially the later higher resolution pictures of Cecilia that emerged, but the majority of them are real. Their origin? Possibly from Edison's phone, which was lost and may have been picked up by the person releasing the images. It is said that the original poster may have initially visited major Hong Kong newspapers in hopes of selling the images but was rejected.

Anyhow, EEG has issued a statement that read as follows: "We are chasing the source of the circulation, the circulator and the downloader. Any distribution, downloading, transference or publication of the image is illegal. We have already passed the case to lawyers to follow up. If the distributor or upload person [of the image] is confirmed, we will seek court action." The chase got so intense that Hong Kong Police had to enlist the help of Interpol to track down the identity of the initial poster who used a computer terminal in an unspecified Southeast Asian country. Sounds like bit of a drama, as did last time when semi-nude pictures of Gillian Chung surfaced from a Malaysian magazine in 2006 (an EEG employee later admitted that that was in fact a marketing ploy).

What do you make of all this? Definitely the biggest story of 2008 in Hong Kong. A final question you may ask: where are the pictures that you are talking about? Hint: try foreign blogs/forums (certain Xanga sites), as all Hong Kong ones are "harmonized."

Jaejoong recently confessed in the interview with Daily Sports about the rumors of dating Hamasaki Ayumi and another top model and actress, simply as is (T/N: literally, “without adding or subtracting”).

He revealed: “It is true that I know Hamasaki Ayumi personally. After we first met at the A-nation Concerts, which Japan’s Avex of which Ayumi is an affiliate holds every summer, we are contacting each other. However, our relationship is not one that those around us believe it to be.”

Nonetheless, the two were mired in a scandal last October. That is because Ayumi purposefully visited Korea in order to watch Jaejoong’s Showcase Performance despite her busy schedule. Jaejoong explained: “At the time, Ayumi and another of my Japanese artist friend (kindly) visited me. I thought that it was a friendship as between musicians. Also, last January Ayumi has even made a surprise announcement of marriage.” Ayumi has revealed through Twitter that she has married with an actor of Austrian descent.

On the scandal with another of Japan’s model/actress, Jaejoong revealed the behind story, saying that the counterpart was “Yamada Yu.” He explained: “Yamada Yu, along with Yamashita Tomohisa and others, is one of my very close friends. After our performance in Los Angeles, I met her in the after-party and (from then) built our friendship. As is well-known already, she is someone who even has a very famous boyfriend named Oguri Shun.”

Jaejoong said: “In conclusion, right now I don’t have a girlfriend and so am spending all of my time at home. I think that my learning Japanese diligently all this while and being candid (T/N: literally, “having shown a candid self”) in meeting with Japanese entertainers were the impetus for our building friendships with each other.”

BANDUNG, Indonesia: One of Indonesia’s best-known pop stars was sentenced Monday to 3½ years behind bars after sex tapes with his celebrity girlfriends found their way to the Internet, riveting and dividing this nation.

Liberals said the embarrassment suffered by Nazril “Ariel” Irham — who insists the videos were not intended for public viewing — was punishment enough.

But hard-liners were outraged, saying the singer was contributing to the country’s moral decline. Hundreds charged the gates of the courthouse in the city of Bandung after the verdict was read out, yelling “Too light! Too light,” as he sped off in an armored police car.

Ariel, lead singer of the country’s most popular band, Peterpan, was the first celebrity to be charged under Indonesia’s strict anti-pornography law, which came into effect in 2008 despite strong opposition from the public and members of government.

It is seen by many as vaguely worded and as carrying overly harsh penalties.

Ariel insists the tapes were stolen from his house and posted online without his knowledge, but presiding Judge Singgih Budi Prakoso said the pop star did nothing to prevent their widespread distribution.

He sentenced him to 3½ years in jail — well short of the maximum 12 years — and slapped him with a $25,000 fine.

“As a public figure, the defendant should be aware that fans might imitate his behavior,” Prakoso said, adding that the frontman for Peterpan — which is also popular in neighboring Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei — did not show remorse.

His supporters were devastated.

“He’s just a victim,” said Roslawati, 30, as tears streamed from his eyes. “He didn’t post that video.” Indonesia, a secular country of 237 million people, has more Muslims than any other country in the world.

More than 500 demonstrators turned out Monday, some pelting the police vehicle carrying Ariel to the court with rotten eggs and tomatoes. Others held placards criticizing the star. When the verdict was read out, they rushed and rattled the gates of the courthouse and briefly scuffled with the singer’s supporters. Police fired warning shots to break up the fight. “More years for Ariel!” shouted Kurnia Maryati, a 33-year-old mother of three. The videos were made public in June.

The first six-minute clip purportedly showed Ariel in bed with his girlfriend, Luna Maya, a top model and actress who joined him at the court Monday. She broke down in tears when the ruling was read out.

The second clip showed him with a former girlfriend, also a well-liked model and television presenter, Cut Tari. The clips were spread on Facebook and YouTube and distributed by mobile phone rapidly, prompting the government to try to impose a so-far unsuccessful online filter for porn. It is not yet clear if the women in the videos will also be punished. But the man who admitted to posting the tapes on the Internet was sentenced Monday in a separate trial to two years in jail.

Why St Joseph’s School in Kuching is privatised

Fund is hard to come by especially if you are not part of the government. What more to say if you are from a church. Then what is the church authority thinking when they decided to turn St Joseph's school to private instead of conveniently receiving yearly grants from the Ministry of Education.? Apparently, the MOE is trying to get the church to REMOVE all the crosses (and other Christian artifacts) from the classrooms because there a quite of Muslim students studying in the school.

St Joseph school being established by the church is to provide education and religious guides to Christians. For non-Christians, it would be purely for education purpose. There is a lot of Sarawak prominent leaders receiving their early education from St Joseph including Taib Mahmud, the Chief Ministry of Sarawak as well as other Muslim leaders. It has been proven that those Muslim leaders studying in St Joseph before does not make them any less Muslim.

Asking the church to privatized its school (and cutting off its funding) is a blatant discrimination since education is to be provided free by the government.

Privatised St Joseph’s School here will start its Primary One and Form One classes in January next year.

This was revealed by Chief Minister Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud at the SJS Band’s Thanksgiving cum Old Josephians’ Reunion Dinner at Riverside Hotel here last night.

These classes will be housed at the current St Joseph Tuition Centre which used to be St Bernadette’s private school here.

Taib said he would contribute his one month’s salary towards the setting up of the school.

Taib, who is a former student of St Joseph’s secondary school, said the new private school would need RM10 million to build and another RM3 million as operation startup cost.

In January this year, church officials broke the news at a dinner on the plan to privatise St Joseph’s government-aided primary and secondary schools.

Subsequently, Taib also affirmed this intention to reporters.

Currently, St Joseph’s secondary school has over 1,500 students while St Joseph’s primary, 855 pupils.

Among those present at the dinner were Taib’s wife Puan Sri Ragad Kurdi Taib, Catholic Archbishop John Ha, former state secretary Tan Sri Datuk Amar Bujang Noor and State Legal Counsel Datuk JC Fong.

Sabah Airways Helicopter Crashed in Sibu

A helicopter crashed at the town square here Monday afternoon, just opposite a hotel where Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin is due to attend a function.

UPDATES: Pilot Sahimi Ghazali, who was involved in the helicopter crash in Sibu Monday afternoon, died at 8.30pm, according to a Sibu Hospital consultant surgeon involved in administering the surgery. Sibu OCPD Shafie Ismail confirmed the death.

City police chief Shafie Ismail said the pilot was injured and has been admitted to hospital.

There was no one else in the helicopter, he added.

It is learnt that Muhyiddin had arrived in another helicopter at the same place, just a few minutes before the crash.

The helicopter, belonging to Sabah Airways and among three carrying Muhyiddin's entourage, crashed at 1.50pm while taking off to return to Sibu airport.

Lim Kit Siang poked fun today at Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s campaign for Sarawak, saying the prime minister’s 1 Malaysia policy had now degenerated into a “1 T-Shirt, 1 Tupperware circus”.

Lim was referring to reports on the distribution of goodie bags to beef up the attendance at Najib’s 1 Malaysia meet-the-leaders session held last night, the first stop of the prime minister’s six-day campaign in Sarawak.

The DAP adviser also criticised Najib for abandoning his duties as prime minister for six days in order to lead Barisan Nasional’s campaign in the hornbill state.

“Najib has not only abandoned his duties, he has also instructed his whole Cabinet to do the same and to camp in Sarawak for the state general election until polling day on Saturday.

“Clearly, Najib has lost confidence in the ability of the Sarawak Chief Minister Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud to secure the election results desired by the prime minister,” Lim said here today.

He added that Najib had turned the Sarawak state polls into a national contest, sacrificing his administration’s national policies and his personal popularity and political reputation.

Lim said that since its inception, Najib’s 1 Malaysia concept had suffered two major blows — when Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin declared himself “Malay first and Malaysian second” and last night, during the start of Najib’s campaign here, when participants at his 1 Malaysia meet-the-leaders session were plied with goodies in exchange for their attendance.

Referring to reports on Najib’s function posted on The Malaysian Insider and another online news portal Malaysiakini, Lim said the event was a “shameful spectacle”.

“It is a most shameful spectacle — the degeneration of Najib’s 1 Malaysia concept to unite Malaysians into a 1 T-shirt, 1 Tupperware circus!” he said.
The Malaysian Insider reported today that two separate rallies held last night — Najib’s meet-the-leaders session and a Pakatan Rakyat ceramah — had drawn vastly different crowd numbers.

For Najib’s function, even with the bussing of people from various neighbouring constituencies into Kuching South City Hall’s indoor stadium, only 1,000 people were seen attending it.

Each participant was given a 1 Malaysia T-shirt to wear to signal unity, and flags to wave at BN government leaders as they made their way into the stadium.

Accompanying the BN chairman were the five Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) candidates, and political bigwigs like Gerakan president Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon and Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein.

After the prime minister followed the red carpet trail leading into the hall to the sounds of hoots and whistles from the white-shirt supporters, hundreds were seen streaming out, choosing to opt out of listening to his speech.

Instead, they were seen loitering around the stadium complex, chatting and feasting on the burgers and mineral water that were handed out.

Even as Najib’s function kicked off, large numbers were seen lounging in the buses and vans that had ferried them to the venue.

When the prime minister began his speech, large groups of people, garbed in the 1 Malaysia T-shirts, decided to stream out of the hall.

Others appeared to look bored but clapped dutifully at Najib’s punchlines or when those around them did so. The bleachers steadily emptied out as the night wore on.

After the function, it was also reported that a scuffle broke out among participants as they scrambled to grab goodie bags containing a poster of Najib and either a water tumbler or a small food container of the Tupperware brand.

Lim also noted that Koh’s participation and that of MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek in the BN campaign for Sarawak was a “curious spectacle” as it was a rare occurrence that local leaders here would depend on their counterparts in the peninsular to woo support.

PM Najib announced on Sunday, 10 April that the government will consider establishing a health metropolis outside Kuching if the Pending electorate voted for BN Pending candidate Dr Sim Kui Hian.

On Monday, 11 April, the PM went to Sri Aman and announced that the federal government would finally build a new RM200 million hospital in Sri Aman to replace the old hospital built in 1959.

Imagine, it has taken the BN government 52 long years to recognize that Sri Aman needs a new hospital! Caring government macam ni, kah? How come the BN has been so blind to the health needs of Sri Aman residents for so long?

In both these cases, the PM reminded the people to support the BN. Otherwise there is no guarantee that these health projects would be implemented. PM said that he “would seriously consider every request of the elected BN people’s representative but if a request is from the opposition members, it might not be approved.”

Haven't win, already making a threat.

Is this not political blackmail? Does this mean that if people in Sri Aman vote for PKR/DAP, there will be no new hospital built there? Does this mean that if voters in Pending support DAP, there will be no health metropolis?

We voters (BN Supporters and Pakatan Supporters) pay our taxes in exchange for public services for our interests.

So, why PM Najib blackmail and bully us with our own money?

Besides, why promise a health metropolis only to Kuching when all the people of Sarawak - rural and urban - from Lawas to Lundu, need quality public health and medical services?

What happened to our rural health services? How come our rural health services have collapsed? Why is healthcare in so many places in Sarawak so neglected? Why do a majority of Sarawakians not have access to “world class public healthcare and medical” services for the last 30 years?

MalaysiaKini.com and SarawakReport.org victim of cyber attacks

Malaysiakini reported that it has remained online despite unrelenting denial-of-service (or DOS) attacks. SarawakReport.org is also under attack. At least their commenting system has been taken out. The culprits behind these DOS attacks are likely to be from the "pro-BN" tech-crews.

Both MalaysiaKini.com and SarawakReport.org are two of the main alternative medias that published plenty of news, snipplets and articles on "anti-BN" or "anti-Taib" during this period of campaigning for the Sarawak State Election. BN controlled medias are keeping their mouth close to a shut. So it is usually a one-sided reporting from the BN controlled medias.

Scathing stories reported in MalaysiaKini.com and SarawakReport.org has proved to be too hot for the BN to handle, leading to the unwarranted cyber-attacks on their sites. Najib is scare. Taib is scare. Heck, the whole BN is scare.
